On September 13, 2019 at 3:00 am I had a heart attack and stroke. It was Friday the 13th so for the first time in my life that day was a very unlucky day for me. I did not have a heart attack at that time yet but it will come a little later in my story.
Heart Attack And Stroke
At 3:00 am I woke up and felt like I needed to get up and go to the restroom. I was laying on my waterbed and noticed that I could not move and I was paralyzed.
I didn’t think anything of it because that has happened to me before with sleep paralysis and didn’t think I was anywhere near having a heart attack and stroke.
Sleep paralyses is where you wake up before your body does and it eventually catches up with you and all is good.
I kept trying to get my body to wake up and it just would not. I was starting to get nervous that something serious was wrong.
I don’t know how I did it but I was able to throw my legs over the bed and flip off on my stomach. I was able to pull myself to the bedroom door and thought I was reaching up to grab the door knob but I could not reach it.
I started yelling for my daughter Riley to help me. I kept calling help, Riley help me. I was lucky she heard me and came out of her room.
I thought I was talking normal but apparently I was incoherent. I finally realized that something was seriously wrong with me.
Heart Attack And Stroke The Ambulance Ride
My daughter went and got my wife. By this time it was 3:37 am so basically it took me half hour to crawl to my door. In my mind I was thinking now I was having a stroke.
I was laying face down on the floor and I was scared. My recollection is iffy at this point so a lot of the story is what I was told by my daughter and wife.
My daughter called 911 to have an ambulance come out and get me. My wife tried opening the door but I was blocking it.
I remember her trying to do that but I couldn’t move. I think I was going in and out of consciousness.
I remember the ambulance workers talking to me through the door and asking if I can move at all. Somehow I was able to move myself away a little and they were able to come in and get me.
They put me on the gurney and took my vitals and I remember them taking me out the front door.
It was so cold because I only was in my underwear and I remember feeling so cold. Once I got in the ambulance they put a blanket on me and I was warmer.
I remember still going in and out of consciousness and the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital and trying to get up but I could not move.
I was heavily sedated and I tried talking but even though in my mind I was saying words what came out of my mouth was not understandable. I was confused why I could not put a sentence together because in my mind I was. Its hard to describe.
Behind the scenes the doctors at the hospital ran a scan on my brain and found that I had a blood clot and it had to be taken care of. It was already starting to stop the blood flow to my brain.
Without surgery it would block my entire left side of the brain and I would be in a vegetative state if I survived the surgery.
Heart Attack And Stroke The Helicopter Flight And My Miracle
The hospital I was in was not equipped to handle the surgery. Just this week a new service was put in where hospitals across the state were connected to all networks and a doctor from York hospital saw my symptoms and said get him here right now.
This doctor was one of the best in the country. So they had the helicopter come get me and the doctors told my wife and daughter tell me good bye because I was not expected to make it to York.
I don’t remember anything except getting on the helicopter. I remember it being very tight. The person there kept telling me to hang in there and stay with us. I really didn’t understand or think we were flying because when i leaned my head over and saw outside it looked as if we were driving. It was hard to explain but it was weird. Maybe I was dreaming.
I remember the person telling me we were here but I must have passed out for good after that because I do not remember anything else.
I woke up hearing the doctor call my name and ask me what my name was. I was talking slurred and my right side was still pretty paralyzed but I could move it.
The doctors were saying you are a miracle. You are very lucky. I had not idea what was going on.
I was told that I had a heart attack and stroke and they took me immediately into surgery. The doctor went up through my groin into my brain and was able to pull the clot out.
While he was doing that my heart started to fail and I was having a heart attack. The doctor was able to stable my heart while the brain surgeon was working on my brain.
In conclusion in the coming blog posts I will discuss my recovery and what I remember. I am a very lucky person due to GOD, all the prayers, and the highly skilled doctors who saved my life from a heart attack and stroke…
I have made it through my first year on September 13, 2020 without another heart attack or stroke but my story took another turn for the worse.
Open heart surgery a few months later…
